Are YOUR personal care products toxic? I was once told that my antiperspirant, my toothpaste—even my shampoo and conditioner—may contain potentially harmful ingredients. I didn’t buy it at first, but the more I observe and read and research, the more I am convinced that it’s true.

Here is just a very basic example; If you wear an antiperspirant, take a look at the product label. There is a very good chance that it includes a warning that goes something like this: “Do not use this product if you have kidney disease. Do not apply to broken skin. If rash develops, discontinue use. Keep out of reach of children.” Interesting, don’t you think? Your kidneys are nowhere near your underarms, so why would they be affected? And most women shave before applying their antiperspirant. If you are a woman, you probably apply your antiperspirant to broken skin just about every day. How will that affect you in the long run?

I think we have all used products—maybe for years—without giving a second thought to what they contain or how our bodies may react to the ingredients over time. Perhaps we are too programmed to believe that everything on the shelves of the grocery store has been created with our best interest in mind, but unfortunately, that is often not the case. Many potentially harmful ingredients are used in place of the high-quality stuff because they are cheaper and may work better to increase a product’s shelf life. My new goal is to keep myself, my family, my community in ST Maarten and the world as clean and safe as possible, and since I made this new change, I am feeling better than I have in years.
